PAST AND PRESENT GOVERNORS OF OYO STATE: THE PEOPLE, THE POWER AND THE POLITICS (CONCLUDING PART)

​Both Navy Captain Adetoye Sode (1993–1994) and  Colonel Chinyere Ike Nwosu (1994–1996) governed under heavy atmospheric tension due to pro-democracy protests by NADECO following Chief MKO Abiola's (GCFR) arrest.

​Colonel Ahmed Usman (1996–1998): He will infamously be remembered for handling the "Five Dead Persons" incident during anti-Abacha protests in Ibadan and declaring pro-democracy activists as "prisoners of war." He was widely disliked for his heavy-handedness.

​Compol Amen Edore Oyakhire (1998–1999): The first police commissioner to be appointment as a sole administrator for Oyo state in a military era. He stabilized the state after Abacha's death and smoothly transitioned Oyo to the Fourth Republic.

​4. The Fourth Republic: Amala Politics and Modern Empires (1999–Present)

​1. Alhaji Lamidi Adesina (1999–2003) — Alliance for Democracy (AD)

​His Policies: Free education, free healthcare, and aggressive civil service reform. As a retired Principal of a public school, his policies was believed to support teachers as many teachers and civil servants bought cars leading to capital L being placed in front of their cars as learners. Many people mockingly say the L stands for Lam Adesina.

​Intrigues, Players and Adversaries: A staunch NADECO progressive, "Lam" fought the federal might of President Olusegun Obasanjo. However, inside Oyo, he fell out with the godfather, Lamidi Adedibu.

​Landmark Achievements: Resuscitated the educational standards of the state and aggressively defended Yoruba political interests.

​People’s Perception: Respected as a principled, fearless leader, but faced backlash over harsh civil service purges.

​Transition: Lam Adesina was defeated in the 2003 PDP tsunami across the Southwest.

​Senator Rashidi Ladoja (2003–2007) — People’s Democratic Party (PDP)

​His Policies: Civil service welfare, civil service housing, and restructuring primary education (the 30-students-per-class/Model School policy).

​Intrigues, Players & Adversaries: His tenure is the blueprint of Oyo political drama. Ladoja refused to share state funds with his political godfather, Lamidi Adedibu. This led to a violent political war, culminating in his illegal impeachment in January 2006 by pro-Adedibu lawmakers. He was replaced by his deputy, Alao-Akala, for 11 months until the Supreme Court reinstated him in December 2006.

​People’s Perception: Deeply loved by civil servants and teachers. Seen as a martyr who stood up to political thuggery.

​Transition: Denied the PDP ticket for a second term due to the godfather feud.

​Otunba Christopher Alao-Akala (2007–2011) — People’s Democratic Party (PDP)

​His Policies: Massive road infrastructure, aggressive local government funding, and human capital empowerment.

​Intrigues & Players: The ultimate populist. Backed fully by Lamidi Adedibu, Akala operated an open-door policy centered on “Amala Politics”—ensuring money trickled down directly to the grassroots.

​Landmark Achievements: Built vast networks of intra-state and rural roads; he initiated the process of 100% ownership of LAUTECH by building the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso.

​People’s Perception: The masses loved his flamboyance and generosity (nicknamed Oyato). However, the elite criticized his administration for excessive political patronage and violence linked to the NURTW.

​Transition: He lost his re-election bid in 2011 to a united opposition coalition.

​Senator Abiola Ajimobi (2011–2019) — Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) / APC

​

​His Policies: Urban renewal, environmental modernization, security, and industrialization.

​Intrigues, Players & Adversaries: Ajimobi was popularly Known as “Koseleri” (The first governor to break the 2-term jinx in Oyo State). Ajimobi was an elite corporate manager who took on powerful interest groups, including market women, transport unions, and even the Olubadan of Ibadan land over chieftaincy reforms.

​Landmark Achievements: Restored security by crushing the violent transport union clashes via Operation Burst, modernized Ibadan entry points, built the Mokola flyover, and institutionalized urban sanitation.

​People’s Perception: Highly polarizing. Admired for cleaning up the state and ending thuggery, but heavily criticized for being arrogant ("Constitutional Constituted Authority") and high-handed.

​Transition: Successfully completed 8 years but failed to install his successor in 2019 as the electorate rebelled against his party via the "O To Ge" political wave.

​Engr. Seyi Makinde (2019–Present) — People’s Democratic Party (PDP)

​His Policies: Data-led governance, free education, infrastructural revolution (connecting all zones of the state), and agricultural expansion.

​Intrigues, Players and Adversaries:  He Stepped into power as an outsider backed by a massive coalition of legacy politicians (including Ladoja). He later fell out with several coalition members but mastered populist messaging to maintain power.

​Landmark Achievements: The construction of the Moniya-Iseyin road, Oyo-Iseyin road, upgrading of the Ibadan Airport, creation of the modern bus terminals (Oyo State Transport Hubs), implemented the circular road network ( a project many judged as involving personal vendetta and high handedness) and consistent and timely payment of civil servant salaries on the "25th" of every month.

​People’s Perception: Immensely popular among the common people, civil servants, and youths who refer to him as the "Seyi seyi" phenomenon. Critics, however, argue that his security architecture has occasionally been too soft on transport unions, his stance against local government autonomy made him earn the wrath of most politicians and the central government. Some believed he is sitting on a keg of gun powder only to explode after his tenure.

​Transition: Currently serving out his second term.
